This page describes our drawbar extension modification service and related considerations.

In the event your regular drawbar requires replacing, this is a great time to consider a drawbar extension.

This service is usually performed for:

  • Boat trailers
  • Caravans
  • Box trailers
  • Custom trailers

The average FELK drawbar is 1500mm which we extend to approximately 1800mm.

What is a drawbar extension and why would I need it?

A drawbar is the length of steel that connects the body of a trailer to the coupling, with the coupling then attaching to the tow-ball.

The drawbar is an integral part of the trailer and helps with the following on boat trailers:-

  • Ensuring the trailer maintains distance from the vehicle, which prevents the trailer damaging the vehicle when turning
  • Longer drawbars make reversing easier
  • Longer drawbars are also opted by those doing beach-launching or using precarious boat ramps who want to keep the vehicle as far away from the water as possible

With box trailers, the drawbar extension helps with the following:

  • Ensuring the trailer maintains distance from the vehicle, which prevents the trailer damaging the vehicle when turning
  • Longer drawbars make reversing easier

It also creates more area for certain modifications on box trailers, namely

  • Adding a spare wheel holder
  • Adding bike racks
  • Adding gas bottle holders
  • Adding a portable BBQ

Drawbar extension process

Please book your modification by using our contact page. The majority of the time, the turnaround will be under 4 weeks (depending on if we need to send steel to the galvanisers), however, this could be as little as a 3-5 day turnaround if we have parts on hand.

We will inspect the trailer to ensure the chassis is roadworthy and this is a viable long term solution for you. For example, if the trailer is at the end of its life, we will not recommend the modification, however, if it is a necessity we will do it.

We use Australian Rectangular Hollow Section (RHS) steel, the thickness used would depend on the GVM of the trailer. The steel we use will be hot-dipped galvanized for high corrosion resistance in marine environments.

All drawbar extension modification is backed by a guarantee, so if you have any issues down the line, you will be supported.

We typically over-engineer modifications and do the job properly. We also have the ability to blue-slip afterwards and update the records with the RMS.

The end result will be 100% ADR compliant.

What else should I be considering?

The majority of modifications are cheaper when they are performed during the initial construction.

Our expert staff will spend time with you to ensure they understand your unique needs for your trailer, to make sure you get exactly what you want and so that you can get the job done easier.

We also recommend for boat trailers only –

  • Considering if you will require a hinged drawbar modification too (this allows you to save space and fit the trailer in a garage)
  • Browsing our other modifications to see what you want now, and what mods can wait.
