TRAILER MANUAL, CARE AND USE OF YOUR TRAILER
Wheel Bearings
FELK Engineering mostly use two types of common wheel bearings (Holden and Ford) for their trailers. These bearings can be purchased from Felk Engineering as well as most well-known vehicle spare parts stores eg.Bunnings, Super Cheap Auto, Repco etc.
It is advisable that bearings are checked, at least every 6 months, preferably every 3 months. Salt water in the cavity of your bearing hub will damage your bearings. To check bearings, we advise you take your trailer to a service centre for professional advice. If your trailer has been fitted with Bearing Protectors, one should check the amount of grease in the cavity of the hub on a regular basis. To check if sufficient grease is present, visually check the outer spring-loaded disc that has the grease nipple attached. The disc should be no deeper than 20mm and if pressing against it, should feel spongy to the finger. Should the protector need additional grease, place your grease gun on the grease nipple and pump sufficient grease into the protector until the disc is approximately 10mm in depth. DO NOT pump excessive grease into your protector as it will squeeze out at the inner seal and the grease will be thrown over your wheels or disc brakes if fitted.
We recommend that a spare set of bearings be carried when going on a long trip. The bearings are fairly inexpensive and could save you a lot of money if needed.
Tyres
The tyres fitted to your FELK Trailer are brand new and of very good quality. Whether your trailer is fitted with 8”, 10”, 13” or 14” wheels, the tyres fitted are a highway pattern, high performance trailer tyre. It is highly recommended that the air pressure is checked and maintained as to the information disclosed on the outer of the tyre wall. Do not travel with under inflated tyres as this may result in a tyre blow out and could lead to a serious accident. Always check tyre pressures before travelling a long journey.
Due to the varying weight of Box Trailer loads, the tyres will need to be checked before and after loading the trailer. Although the tyre load capacity can be high, Box trailers should not be overloaded so that the springs have no travel in the camber. Overloading can cause the axle to break or the spring to collapse and lead to a serious accident.
Brakes
Three different types of brakes are usually fitted to FELK trailers – Mechanical override, Hydraulic or Electric Brakes. This is mostly determined in accordance with the latest Australian Design Rules / ADR’s, vehicle standards bulletins and legislative requirements.
Mechanical override brakes are most commonly fitted to trailers that have an aggregate trailer mass (ATM) weight capacity less than 2000Kg. Boat trailers are fitted with galvanised disc hubs and a mechanical operated galvanised caliper. Box trailers are fitted with a 9” mechanical brake assembly and a hub brake drum. Both brakes rely on a galvanised steel brake cable that is connected to an override coupling. This coupling is fixed to the very front of the drawbar. The mechanical braking system is automatically activated if the towing vehicle applies its brakes and the weight of the trailer is pushed in a forward direction, placing pressure on the override-coupling shaft. Please observe a reversing clip located just behind the coupling head. This clip will rotate onto or away from the shaft. Its purpose is to lock out the brakes while reversing. This clip must be rotated onto the shaft to prevent the brakes from being applied whilst reversing. If travelling, this clip must be rotated away from the shaft to allow the brakes to function. If parking your trailer, pull backwards on the handbrake lever and place the flip over tongue into the grooves located on top of the coupling body.
With the above brake, please ensure that the brake cable is always adjusted so the travel of the actuation lever at the rear of the coupling has approximately 10mm to 15mm travel.
Warning:
It is important that the adjustment on mechanical brakes is checked periodically. The brake cable will stretch, and the pads will wear down and compromise your braking. An adjustable turnbuckle is fitted under the coupling that will allow you to adjust and fine-tune the cable length. If in doubt, please visit your local trailer service centre or give us a call, our phone number is located on the front of this brochure.
Hydraulic brakes are mainly fitted to our larger Boat trailers that have an aggregate load capacity of 2000kg and above. These brakes do not require adjusting however brake fluid levels in the hydraulics must be checked periodically. Your brakes will not function without brake fluid. Service for these brakes should be left to an authorized service centre.
Electric brakes are not recommended for Boat Trailer use. Salt water and electrics do not mix and one should try to avoid these brakes on a boat trailer. If your boat trailer has been fitted with electric brakes, a connection for flushing with fresh water has been added to the inside of the backing plate of the brakes. To ensure long life on these brakes, periodic checks for corrosion on the inner magnet is essential. To do this, you will have to remove the outer drum. For further information on maintenance, please consult your dealer who has recommended these brakes.
Electric brakes are an option to our smaller Box Trailers and a standard application on our larger Box trailers over 2000kg. These brakes can be adjusted by means of an “in-cab controller” / “electric brake controller” which needs to be fitted to the tow vehicle by a licenced auto electrician. Brake pads and magnets should be checked periodically for wear.
COUPLING
The coupling fitted to your trailer is designed to take a 50mm tow ball. The coupling has been made to meet Australian Standards and is made out of the highest quality to ensure a safe connection to your vehicle. Please check your coupling connection to the ball before each trip. All couplings are fitted with a safety latch at the side of the head. This latch can be secured with a padlock for security. Padlock is not supplied with purchase. Finally, attach the safety chain that is located at the end of the drawbar to the vehicle in case the connection should fail. Mechanical or Hydraulic override couplings have been greased at the grease nipples prior to sale.
Note: Please ensure coupling if firmly secured onto the tow ball prior to transit.
JOCKEY WHEEL
Please use extreme caution when using your Jockey wheel. If your trailer has no brakes and you are parked on a hill, chock your wheels prior to lifting the trailer off your tow ball. The weight of your is heavy and can cause serious damage or cause an accident should it start moving. You may not be able to hold it back! If your trailer has been fitted with a wind-up Jockey wheel, do not wind the screw as high as possible. The screw will become detached from the main body and the Jockey wheel can collapse.
CAUTION:
Always be cautious with Jockey wheels. Keep feet and small children away from Jockey wheels and from under the drawbar, as failure has been known to cause serious injury.
LIGHTS
Your FELK trailer is fitted with a premium combination lighting system. Boat trailer lamps are fully submersible and depending on the manufacturer, should be maintained by simply washing with fresh water. If your submersible lamp has an opening on the underside of the lamp, it’s because it works on an air pressure lock out. DO NOT spray water into the lamp through this opening. All trailers are fitted with a standard 7 pin flat plug and meets with Australian standards.
MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE
PRIVATE USE:
We recommend that you check all trailer components after 1000km. A lot of new parts need bedding in and adjusting after a lengthy trip. Please refer the checklist below for items in need of inspection. Should you have any problems in understanding or following the checklist through, we urge you to make a booking with our service centre for a 1000km routine check. A minimum cost of a half hour labour charge will apply (please contact our office for current labour charge rates).
CHECKLIST:
-
- • Coupling Bolts and adjusting screw
- • Handbrake lever and brake cable adjustment (if applicable)
- • Movement and grease in bearings
- • Tyres and tyre pressure
- • Springs and locator pads
- • Brake caliper and adjustment screws (if applicable)
- • U-Bolts on axle and frame components for tightness
- • Rollers, split pins and washers
- • Jockey wheel and fittings
- • Winch mechanism, cable or strap
- • Lights and globes
- • General welding on frame
Repeat the above check every 6 months or 10000km, whichever comes first. Do not be mislead that if you only used your trailer once or twice in this period, that everything is OK. Bearings will start to corrode immediately if salt water has entered the hub cavity after one launch. Salt will attack every part of your trailer and can cause severe damage within 6 months. Take half an hour to check your trailer pre–holiday movement and know that you and your family can enjoy safe travels!
INDUSTRIAL, BUSINESS AND COMMERCIAL USE:
Due to more frequent trailer usage, various terrain, working environment / harsher conditions and various trailer operators, FELK Engineering recommend commercial use trailers are inspected every 3 months / 5000kms by a licenced mechanic or service centre. This additional maintenance is integral to the longevity of the trailer and ensures all parts and componentry are attended to and replaced on a regular basis.
